One of the first issues we regularly discover with new clients is that they have a duplicate content issue caused by the way in which their domain is set up. An example of this scenario is if we could access the Searchfactory.com.au domain on both of these URL’s:

  1. http://searchfactory.com.au
  2. http://www.searchfactory.com.au

The reason this is an issue is because it creates two versions of the same page. While you would consider that the likes of Google are getting pretty good at working this sort of thing out, it is still definitely something that should be fixed! Imagine your website can then be accessed like this:

  1. http://searchfactory.com.au/blog/
  2. http://www.searchfactory.com.au/blog/

And you can see how this would then be present across all of the pages on your website.

What do you need to do?

You can choose whether you wish to have your website displayed as a version with or without www, but you must ensure that the one you choose not to display, 301 redirects to the other.

To do this, enter your CPanel and select Redirects. You will see the below:

301redirect-domain

You need to select Permanent (301), then redirect it to either the version with www (http://www.searchfactory.com.au) or without www (http://searchfactory.com.au). Select Wild Card Redirect so that all pages within that domain redirect to the version that you want. The version of the domain you select to use will not have any significant impact on SEO, so choose with or without www based on your preference.

Finally, click Add and you’re done! It should look something like this in the bottom of the screen after implemented:
