Google Australia and New Zealand Got a New Boss

In the wake of Maile Carnegie’s departure for ANZ bank, Jason Pellegrino has been appointed has the managing director at Google Australia and New Zealand. Pellegrino has been with the search conglomerate for seven years, and is well suited to the multi-faceted nature of the role after gaining experience in various leadership jobs around Google. Kudos!

Instagram Launches Business Profiles

Coming soon to a screen near you – Instagram has started to roll out specially designed profiles for businesses. While this is only available to a select group of testers at the moment, the update will make it easier for consumers to contact and find businesses. These profiles will look almost the same as personal accounts, but there will be an added ‘Contact’ button that prompts a pop-up menu where users can choose to email the business or get directions to its location. There will also be some benefits for brands, allowing them to track their posts and purchase ads all only using a mobile device. Read more and see what it will look like here!

AdBlock Plus Teamed Up with Flattr

Yes, we know that ads can be annoying. But that revenue is vital to creators and publishers, so AdBlock Plus and Flattr have joined to create Flattr Plus: a browser extension that automatically pays for your web content. Launching soon, users can nominate how much they’re willing to pay each month, and the program’s algorithm will distribute that to your favourite sites. It’s an interesting model that can be compared to cable television, where a user pays for a subscription so they don’t have to sit through ads. Flattr Plus is saying it’s what the internet should be, but we’ll let you be the judge!
