When it comes to links that are earned, or established with legitimate websites, there are a number of great ways that they can be acquired. One of the strategies that is often overlooked is establishing relationships with local clubs or organisations. Not only is it a great way to acquire good links from high quality websites, it’s also a great way to support local clubs or organisations that in most cases might need it.

Researching the Right Organisations

When looking around for opportunities, first start with something that might be a good partnership for your business. If you’re a Brisbane bike shop, a Sydney-based chess club might not be the best partnership! Look for opportunities within similar industries, such as Brisbane-based cycling clubs. They’d be a great start to align yourself with relevant businesses that could not only provide the benefit of the link, but also generate direct sales.

You can then expand your search to incorporate other businesses in your area. Maybe a local swimming club, athletics group or charity would also be a great fit for your business.

Approaching Organisations and Finding an Opportunity

If this is predominantly a strategy for link building, you need to determine the best way to get this placed. Contextual placements (links within a body of content) are ideal and you could even find multiple ways to gain links. I’ve selected a completely random club website that we could analyse opportunities from below:

Website: http://www.springsswimmingclub.org.au

Immediate link for a Sponsor: http://www.springsswimmingclub.org.au/sponsors.html

There’s also an Extra Opportunity for a Link within Content on their homepage news feed. Make this part of the sponsorship agreement: http://www.springsswimmingclub.org.au

Negotiation of Placement:

Finally, one of the biggest issues is usually that sponsorship comes with an annual fee. You don’t want to be stuck in a scenario where you have 20 sponsorship agreements locked in that are going to renew 12 months from now. The key is to negotiate permanent placement as part of your initial agreement. Be prepared to offer a little more in terms of monetary compensation in order to gain a permanent placement for your show of support.
